2005-11-07 - 16:19 He did it, by gum, he really did it. Lincoln has gone sober. Lane, Linc's best friend since 1988, read my post yesterday. He told me I should give Lincoln and ultimatum. Quit drinking or have a nice life. I wasn't so much ready to do that, but I did want to see him get some help. So I told him. He was at the bar last night, and Joe (the owner) had bought him a cold one. When Joe wandered off and Linc and I were alone (well, alone at the bar anyway), he asked how I was feeling about last night. I showed him what I wrote and he asked what we should do, if I wanted to see him anymore. I said of course I did, but I knew that he knew he had a problem and I would like him to get some help. He went silent for a long time, then said we couldn't see each other anymore. So I took him home. On the way, I told him he was a good person who just needed some help. He wasn't buying it. I racked my brain for something to say, but nothing would come. I dropped him off. He said nothing, and neither did I. I drove home, only several blocks away, and sat in the car for probably ten minutes. I was not so much upset that Lincoln didn't want to see me as that he was going to go right back to his old behavior, which I knew would eventually kill him. My cellphone rang. I answered, Lincoln told me he still wanted to see me. He said he was ready to put the drinking behind him and that he was going to call his buddy, one of the only other cooks he knew who was sober. I told Lincoln that I loved him, that I was so proud of him, and that I wanted to some over. I hung up without waiting for and answer and sped with more than my usual lawlessness to his apartment. I am done drinking, too. Besides beikng a solidarity thing for Linc, the booze is not doing me any good. Remember November 6, folks, it's the day we went sober. Lincoln has an idea for a website, a support forum for people in the hospitality industry who are going sober. It's hard there--getting fucked up after work is just what everybody does. He knows two cooks who don't drink, and one is in the next time zone. He needs some people around to help him. Stay tuned for the web addy, I'll post it in the links when the site is up.
